This will avoid the external subtitle bug. Find out on the HBO Max website or in your AT&T account. Lines 489 and 490 can be commented out to ignore the HBO Max subtitles.

If you already have HBO or an AT&T service (internet, tv or cell phone), you may have access to HBO Max already in your existing plan. It's annoying enough to make me want to pirate the content that I'm already paying for so that I can watch it outside of the HBO Max app. Subscriptions are also available for 14.99 monthly.
Other folks here have mentioned this problem. But that's only a temporary "fix", since if I ever flip the subtitles on HBO Max on the AppleTV, they get stuck on again. when i press the () button on the Roku controller it just gives the English options. To change the caption styling, on your Apple TV go to Settings > Accessibility > Subtitles & Captioning > Style. Closed captions: Select Subtitles, then choose English (US) SDH or Off. The same movies offer Spanish audio/subs on computer browser and on a the smart TV HBO max app. Do one of the following: Subtitles: Choose a subtitle language. The only "fix" is to turn the subtitles off on the HBO Max web site or HBO Max iOS app. HBO max on my Roku express isn't letting me change subtitles/audio to Spanish. Now you'll get options for those captions: size, color, etc. Click on that and then on Closed Captions at the top of the screen.

The primary annoying problem I have with HBO Max is if I ever turn on subtitles (as in "what did he say?" or "what did she say?"), then whenever I start a new episode, the subtitles turn on and I have to shut them off, twice in fact, since they turn back on right after the intro of a TV episode. Go to On Demand and click on 'HBO Max app is now on X1' Wait a while and when a movie or whatever shows up, click to the left of the screen. I did have an episode of Succession stop about midway through last night and I could only resume it by killing and restarting the HBO Max app, but it was fine after that. Captions work fine on the HBO Max app on my Samsung smart tv. They opened a case number but then closed it without fixing the issue. See if you can watch okay from another device to try to rule out issues on the network connection between you and the HBO Max CDN. Captions aren't working on the Tivo Stream 4k HBO Max app.
